As the heading says, we often hear that the men and women has differences in hearing capability. But how? And Why? To get the answers to your questions, patiently read ahead my brother/sister.
The first systematic evaluation of the hearing of girls and boys was performed by Professor John Corso of Penn State University in the late 1950's and early 1960's. Dr. Corso simply used a soundproof booth, headphones, and a tone generator. He consistently found that the girls hear better than boys do, especially in the range of frequencies above 2 kHz. See John Corso, Age and sex differences in thresholds, Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 31:498-507, 1959; also John Corso, Aging and auditory thresholds in men and women, Archives of Environmental Health, 6:350-356, 1963.
Likewise, Professor Jane Cassidy at Louisiana State University Professor Cassidy, in a study of 350 newborn baby girls and boys, found that the girls hearing was substantially more sensitive than the boys, especially in the 1000- to 4000-Hz range which is so important for speech discrimination. See Jane Cassidy and Karen Ditty. Gender differences among newborns on a transient otoacoustic emissions test for hearing. Journal of Music Therapy, 37:28-35, 2001.
A variety of more recent studies using more sophisticated technology have not only confirmed the superior hearing of girls at higher frequencies, but have also begun to demonstrate the anatomical basis for that superiority. The group led by Hiroaki Sato was the first to demonstrate consistent sex differences in the anatomy of the inner ear: girls are born with a cochlea which is shorter and stiffer than boys. The shorter, stiffer cochlea provides a more sensitive frequency response. See their paper, Sexual dimorphism and development of the human cochlea. Acta Otolaryngologica, 111:1037-1040, 1991.
A few years later, a French group led by Thierry Morlet demonstrated that the hair cells themselves are stiffer (and therefore more sensitive) in girls compared to the hair cells in boys. See their paper, Development of cochlear active mechanisms in humans differs between gender, Neuroscience Letters, 220:49-52, 1996.
From the above information, we have known about some reasons why and how the hearing of men and women differs. Now let us move a bit further, towards that tree which you can see at distance over there. Yes thats correct! The tree of Islam. In other words, the tree which claimed that it has ALL the solutions to the problems of the traveler who stops under it.
How does Islam accommodate this reality between men and women???
In this post, let me highlight on just 2 things which will be enough for us to realise the Perfectness of this Deen, to prevent the post getting long.
Position of men and women in the Congregation of Salah
In the Salah, the women who go to the Congregation are to be stood at the back inside the mosque. Because that is the way for the women to be most safe from intermingling with men. But, one might have said that it will be a burden for the women to hear the recitation and the Takbeers of the Imam when they stay there. However, the Creator of men and women Knows Everything about all the needs and wants and capabilities which He has put in them. Therefore its not something to feel strange when the women never claimed that they do not hear clearly from back in the Congregation.
Anas (radiyallaahu 'anh) reports: “An orphan and I performed salat behind Rasulullah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) and my mother, Ummu Sulaim, stood behind us” (Sahih Bukhari, vol 1, pg 236)
The Obligatory Hijab of women which covers their ears
Allah has made it Wajib for each and every believing woman to cover their Aurah which includes their ears too. Be the cloth which covers their head thick or thin, it is surely a barrier to the sound waves to reach the ears. See the Greatness and Wisdom of Allah! He has made women's hearing much more stronger and unique, which will not affect their hearing due to the Hijab they wear. Subuhaanallah!
Allah (subuhaanahu wata'aala) said in the Quran, "O Prophet! Say to your wives and your daughters and the women of the faithful to draw their outergarments (jilbabs) close around them; that is better that they will be recognized and not annoyed. And God is ever Forgiving, Gentle." (Quran, Surah al-Ahzaab, Verse 59)
From the above little information, we have seen the Perfectness of this Complete Way of Life. Allahu Akbar! Surely there is a Huge Wisdom behind when Allah said, "This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion." (Quran, Surah al-Maaidah, Part of Verse 3). But for those who ponder about it.
My Du'a is that Allah make us ateadfast in His Deen, and make our Iman stronger day by day, and enter us in to the Jannah! Ameen!
Wassalam 'Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh
